REACH is a multidisciplinary team that provides assessment, consultation and in-services to address the educational needs of children and students throughout southern Alberta who have severe learning needs.

Providing an effective and efficient educational support service that is designed to facilitate student access to and participation in their learning environment.

REACH endeavors to…...

  • provide specialized resources and services that facilitate student participation in the learning environment
  • assist schools in developing and implementing comprehensive educational programs for students
  • develop understanding and knowledge of individual student needs
  • work collaboratively with the learning team to identify factors affecting learning and to identify accommodations that will support the student in the educational process
  • identify programming goals and objectives that can be integrated into the daily classroom routine
  • work collaboratively with the learning team in the implementation and monitoring of individual and group programs
  • be a resource regarding current developments and trends in service to students with severe learning needs.

REACH educational support services for students…...

  • aged 2.5 to 20 years
  • in a school or ECS program
  • meeting the criteria for the following Alberta Education exceptional student codes and requiring the support of a multidisciplinary team.
    • 41 Severe Cognitive Disability
    • 43 Severe Multiple Disability
    • 44 Severe Physical or Medical Disability – including Autism
    • 45 Deafness
    • 46 Blindness
    • 47 Severe Delay Involving Language *
    • 55 Hearing Disability
    • 56 Visual Disability

* REACH services are not available for ECS children with a severe delay involving language (code 47) unless there is evidence that the child has severe special needs that are not reflected by the current code. A child requiring an augmentative communication system or the support of a multidisciplinary team would be considered for REACH support.

Code 42 Severe Emotional/Behavioural are not eligible for REACH Services.

Services Provided

  • Assessment: to determine a student’s strengths and areas of need for educational programming purposes.
  • Planning Conference: to share assessment findings with all team members (teachers, parents, community agencies). Recommendations are reviewed and a plan of action identified.
  • Consultation: to provide support to schools by teaming collaboratively to develop programs, to make curricular modifications, to provide materials, to identify equipment needs or environmental modifications, and to model teaching strategies.
  • In-service: to provide information on a wide range of topics that will support schools in providing appropriate learning opportunities and experiences for students.
  • Determination and implementation of assistive technology needs.
  • Support to facilitate inclusion.
  • Support in Individual Program Plan development.
  • Connections with community supports/resources.
  • Transition planning.

Outcomes

For Students:

  • improved students’ access to the learning environment
  • improved students’ participation in the learning environment
  • improved student learning

For School Staff Members:

  • increased knowledge about ways of meeting the needs of students with severe learning needs
  • improved ability to develop and implement comprehensive educational programs for students with severe learning needs.

For Parents:

  • increased parents’ knowledge about needs of their child in an educational context
  • increased parents’ ability to support their child’s educational goals.
